THURSDAY, 1.00PM:
SOUTH African Football Association CEO Danny Jordaan said on Wednesday the Four Nations tournament might be called off if there is no answer from China and Nigeria by Friday. Jordaan said only Namibia has confirmed its participation in this year’s tournament.
“We have received no response from China or Nigeria to our invitation,” said Jordaan. A decision about this year’s Four Nations Cup will be taken on Friday.
This could be a blow to national coach Clive Barker, who has used the tournament in the past to gauge promising players and those on the verge of a national selection. “We may have to find other mechanisms to give Clive the opportunity to look at the overseas and local players after the Congo match,” said Jordaan.
Meanwhile, the national under-23 selectors have named the squad to play Mozambique in the main curtain raiser to the Bafana Bafana match against Congo at the FNB stadium on August 16.
The squad is: Emile Baron (Hellenic), Wayne Roberts (Cape Town Spurs),Michael Shata (Sundowns), Durin Francis (Michau Warriors), Aaron Mokoena (Jomo Cosmos), Matthew Booth (Cape Town Spurs), Dillion Sheppard (Southern KwaZul-Natal), Mark Decastro (Wits University), Claude Collett (Supersport United), Bradley Carnell (Wits University), Anton Greyling (Supersport United), Thiyekile ‘Ace’Gulwa (Teenage Lovers), Trevor Mosehathebe (Sundowns), Crissandro de Weber (Hellenic), Glen Salmon (Supersport United), Bradley August (Hellenic), Lucky Mhlathi (Jomo Cosmos), Tebogo Sehlalo (Katlehong City), Junaid Hartley (Racing, France), Quinton Fortune (Atletico Madrid), Patrick Mbutho (Kaizer Chiefs), BenedictMcCarthy (Ajax, Holland), Daniel Matsau (Lorraine Lions), Stanton Fredericks (Wits University), Nkiphitheni Mathombo (Great North East).
