Storm warning as JSE awaits Wall Street’s fall-out

MONDAY, 11.00AM

JOHANNESBURG Stock Exchange traders are preparing for a stormy day on Monday following sharp declines on international markets after the local close on Friday.

Wall Street’s Dow Jones industrial average shed 247,37 points or 3,1% to 7694,7, its biggest fall since Black Monday on October 19 1987. Wall Street followed an earlier slide in London, with the FTSE index marking up its biggest loss since 1992, losing 125 points to 4 856.

The JSE’s industrial index was under severe pressure of Friday, losing 100 points before feeling the effects of international markets. With analysts expecting further losses on international markets this week, the local exchange is bracing itself for a tough session.
