THE Managing Director of the International Cricket Board, Dr Ali Bacher, on Thursday announced a 24-man under-19 squad to play against their English counterparts in December and Janaury, then in the Under-19 World Cup to be held in South Africa from January 12 to February 2 . Bacher said the squad includes nine Black youngsters – selected entirely on merit.

SA OFFICILS FOR US OPEN TWO South African Tennis officials have been invited to officiate in this year’s US Open. The two — Ian Smith from Pretoria, who will work on the chair and Rita Lewis of Kempton Park on the lines — will officiate during qualifying and the main draw match.
SARU PLOTS WAY FORWARD THE South African Rugby Union (Saru) will hold a two-day indaba at the weekend in Port Elizabeth to discuss the way forward in South African rugby. Brian Rooyen, who initiated the commission, said: “The meeting has attracted widespread support, especially in the light of the pressure being exerted on members of the co-ordinating committee by Sarfu and its affiliates.” The meeting is a follow-up to the Saru meeting held in Kimberley earlier this year.
HK BEATS SA BOWLERS SOUTH Africa failed to stop Hong Kong in their bowls Test at Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe on Thursday. It looked good for South Africa until Baker’s fours lost 21-16 and Noel Kennedy lost 25-16. South Africa started very well when Gery Baker, Theuns Fraser and Donny Piketh steamrollered Ke Wallis, Bill McMahon and Tony Tong 21-10 and Neil Burkett and Alan Gordon played to a 21-21 draw. Hong Kong are now leading with 17 points and have two matches left. South Africa have 13 points and with four matches left.
SA BOYS BEAT FRENCH SOUTH Africa’s under-14 boy’s tennis team beat their French counterparts 3-0 in the quarterfinals of the NTT World Youth Tennis Cup in Nagoya, Japan on Thursday. They will now play with Russia – who beat third seeded Germany.
