FRIDAY, 12.30PM:
SOUTH AFRICA’S Wayne Ferreira — unseeded at the US Open for the first time since 1993 — will play against Spaniard Alberto Berasategui in the first round of the Open at Flushing Meadow courts on Monday. If he beats Berasategui, he will play against Austria’s number five Thomas Muster and then Tim Henman of Britain.
Ferreira, who is suffering from an anbkle injury, said: “I’m quite happy with the draw. I’m not that unhappy with either Muster — although as the number five he is extremely tough — or Henman,” he said. “The first couple of rounds are always difficult, but it could have been worse.”
Meanwhile, women’s world number five Amanda Coetzer advanced to the quarterfinals of the $450 000 US women’s hardcourt championships in Atlanta on Wednesday.
