THE National Olympic Committee of South Africa is gearing up for another bid attempt for 2008, starting with an analysis of what Athens offered that swayed the International Olympics Committee.
But South Africa’s first problem will be to address its failure to capture the African vote — half the 20 African countries voted against Cape Town on Friday.
Cape Town made it to the third round of voting, defeating both Buenos Aires and Stockholm. Olympics chief Antonio Samaranch, who announced the result, said Cape Town had done very well. “If it runs again, Cape Town will be very strong in 2008.”
Nocsa president Sam Ramsamy said: “We want to do our homework thoroughly and come up with sound, well-researched findings that will help us in our future efforts … we will also have to see if there are cities interested in entering again and whether the sponsors are still prepared to commit themselves.”
