Luyt hints he might step down

TUESDAY, 1.00PM:

CONTROVERSIAL South African Rugby Football Union boss Dr Louis Luyt has hinted that he could step down as the president of the Gauteng Lions Rugby Union.

Luyt and his vice-presedent Gert Augustyn were re-elected unopposed at the union’s meeting at Ellis Park on Monday. He said: “The time has come for a lot of new faces, mine included.”

Meanwhile, former Tranvaal Rugby Union — now Gauteng Lions Rugby Union — president Jannie le Roux has come out in support of Luyt. Le Roux also offered Luyt his full backing against the government-instituted Browde Commission of Inquiry into the affairs of Sarfu and its affiliates. He said he supports Luyt as well as his fight to retain his seat as South African Rugby Football Union president. “You are known as a person who always stands up and faces those who attack you and one who has the guts to take people on, even the government,” he told Luyt.
