SOUTH AFRICA has got a new world boxing champion in Corrie Sanders after he won the vacant heavyweight World Boxing Union title against Ross Purity at the Carousel on Saturday night.
Sanders outpointed Purity in a boring 12-round fight on the tripple title bill on Saturday. He said he is now ready to take on the best heavyweights in the world. He said he wants to fight Evander Holyfield and Lenox Lewis before he retires.
Vuyani “The Beast” Bungu proved his critics wrong on Saturday when he outclassed the Australian based Arnelo Barotillo to succesfully defend his title for the 10th time. Bungu is likely to fight World Boxing Organisation champion Junior Jones for a unification.
One of South Africa’s brightest boxing prospects Cassius Baloyi, was the only boxer to register a knockout in the tournament. Baloyi knockout his challenger Laszlo Bognar in the seventh round and succesfully defended his title.
Jacob “Baby Jake” Matlala won his non title fight bout against Louis Doria on a 12th round stoppage. “I don’t think the referee should have stopped it,” said Matlala.
‘Bungu proved he is one of the greatest champions. He is definitely going to get Jones,” confirmed Rodney Berman — boss of the Golden Gloves Boxing Promotions — after the fight.
