Kleynhans to coach Golden Cats

FRIDAY, 9.10AM:

FREE STATE’S Peet Kleynhans will coach the Golden Cats regional team in next year’s Super 12 rugby series. Kleynhans was appointed by the four unions which make up the Golden Cats — Gauteng, Free State, Griqualand West and Northern Free State — on Thursday.

It was expected that Gauteng Lions Dawie Snyman will take the coaching position but because of his recent appointment as the national Under-21 rugby coach, he was overlooked. In picking the squad for the Golden Cats, Kleynhans will be assisted by the respective coaches of the four union — Andre Makgraaff (Griquas), Gerrie Sonnekus (NFS) and Snyman. Tobie van Rooyen (NFS) will act as the convenor.

The squad will prepare at the venue of the team having he most players in the squad. Three games will be played at Ellis Park and two in Bloemfontein.

A TITLE FIGHT FOR BERGMAN JAN Bergman will fight for the World Boxing Association welterweight title on February 21. Golden Gloves Boxing Promotions boss Rodney Berman said: “I have never ochestrated a world title bout for any of my boxers unless I beleived they could win. When it comes to Bergman any fighter he hits with that left hook is in big trouble.”

HELLENIC BEAT MAULERS PETER Kirsten scored a brace for Hellenic in their 3-1 win over League defending champions Manning Rangers at Green Point Stadium on Thursday. Maxwell Dube sealed victory for the “Greek Gods” while Simon Makhubela replied for the Mighty Maulers.

U23 TO TAKE ON UGANDANS SOUTH AFRICAN national Under-23 soccer squad — affectionately known as Amaglugluglu — will play two friendly matches against their Ugandan counterparts in KwaZulu-Natal next month. One game wil be played at Chatsworth Stadium on December 3 and one at Jan Smuts Stadium on December 6 in Maritzburg.

SARFU TO ARBITRATETHE South African Rugby Football Union will meet on Monday to arbitrate on the coach of the Northern Bulls team after Thursday’s meeting between the four union presidents ended in a stalemate. Gauteng Falcons and Mpumalanga Pumas are believed to have supported the appointment of Falcons new coach Phil Pretorius and the Blue Bulls and North West want Bulls new coach Eugene van Wyk.
