LEADING SA companies have joined forces to launch the SA National Business Council on HIV/Aids. A statement issued by Southern Life on Thursday said said the council, to be chaired by Metropolitan Life chairman Dr Nthato Motlana, was created in conjuction with the health department, Medical Association of SA, and the Medical Research Council, who will act as technical associates to the SANBC. The council forms part of the Global Council on HIV/Aids established — with President Nelson Mandela as patron — in conjuction with the Geneva-based Joint United Nations Programmes Council on HIV/Aids.
IFP TABLES DEATH PENALTY BILL
THE Inkatha Freedom Party on Wednesday tabled a Private Member’s Bill in the National Assembly proposing to amend the Constitution and allow Parliament to approve legislation imposing the death penalty. The Bill, in the name of IFP MP Peter Smith, seeks to amend sections of the Constitution prohibiting the treatment or punishment of any person in a cruel, inhuman or degrading way, IFP chief whip Koos van der Merwe said in a statement issued on Thursday. He added that the Constitution needs to be amended to bring it into line with the ”clearly expressed democratic wishes of the South African population”. Meanwhile, the National Party on Wednesday called for a national conference on capital punishment.
