MORE FARMERS MURDERED The bodies of a farming couple from Potgietersrus were found in their house by a neighbour on Monday. Ben van Wyk, 67, and his wife Rosa, 43, were stabbed dead. Their disabled children, aged 21 and 10, spent two days with the bodies, unable to call for help. They are being treated in hospital for shock.
Meanwhile, on Sunday a KwaZulu-Natal farmer and his wife fought off an armed attack. William Robinson, 49, and his wife Lesley, 45, arrested one of the attackers after shooting him in the pelvis and hitting him with a spade.
MBEKI’s MOM IN A HUFF ABOUT CRIME EPAINETTE MBEKI, 81, mother of Deputy President Thabo Mbeki, has written to Safety and Security Minister Sydney Mufamadi to complain about the country’s soaring crime rate. She posted her letter on Monday after police failed to make any arrests following an armed robbery in her Goodwill Store in Idutywa in the Eastern Cape last month. “Although I made a decision to close my business, I have had second thoughts now. This business is here to stay in spite of all the recent threats and intimidation,” Mbeki said. Queenstown police spokesman Captain Thembisile Phathekile said police are still investigating the case and appealed to members of the community to assist. He said police had responded to the robbery. A policeman was seriously injured in a follow-up operation and shootout with suspects in a forest near the store, he added.
