BENT JOINS MASTERS’ SQUASH TEAM
WORLD Masters 45 champion Charlie Bent of Western Province has been included in the national masters’ squash team due to tour England and play in the British Open masters’ championships in Birmingham from March 25 to April 5.
The team: Men’s 45: Bent, Willie du Toit (NG), Tony Jackson (KZN); Men’s 50: Frikkie Bester (WP), Nick Penstone (G), Eddie Schoch (NW); Men’s 55: Roy Gossman (KZN).
HOLIDAY SET FOR COMEBACK
FORMER IBF lightweight champion Phillip Holiday is to make his comeback bid against Eric Jakubowski of the US at the Carousel on March 21. The bout is most likely to be fought at catchweight, and will be the South African’s first since losing his belt to Shane Mosley in the US in August.
US TWINS FOR ENGEN SERIES
ATHLETICS supporters will have to keep their eyes peeled this week, when US twins Alvin and Calvin Harrison compete on the Engen grand prix summer series circuit. The brothers pose a threat to the SA national 400m runners, with Alvin winning the US 400m title in 45.05 seconds at an indoor meeting at the weekend, and his brother taking silver with 45.18 in Atlanta.
CLUB BAN COULD SCUPPER SA TEST
NORTHAMPTON owner Keith Barwell added fuel to the fire in the latest club vs country row by banning Saints players from touring with national rugby teams this summer. The decision, which would eliminate Paul Grayson, Tim Rodber and uncapped centre Mattie Stewart, as well as players from other clubs such as Saracens and Newcastle, could force the cancellation of test series’ in SA, New Zealand and Australia.
