Sebola brace keeps Pirates in race

WEDNESDAY, 12.45PM:

ANDRIES SEBOLA showed his stuff once again by scoring two goals in Orlando Pirates’ 2-0 win over Moroka Swallows in a fast-paced match at the FNB stadium on Tuesday night.

Sebola, who was included in the starting line-up because of Jerry Sikhosana’s suspension, proved his worth to the Buccaneers by scoring in the 47th minute and again in the 81st.

Tuesday’s victory has kept alive Pirates’ hopes of winning the Castle Premiership.

Also on Tuesday, Supersport United and Manning Rangers played to a 2-2 draw in the rain at Chatsworth.

Striker George Koumantarakis drew first blood for Supersport at his former home ground in the fifth minute, and 20 minutes later Anton Greyling made it 2-0.

Rangers pulled one back three minutes later when Supersport defender Eugene Zwane put the ball into his own net. Substitute Lenin Steenkamp headed home a free kick past ‘keeper Paul Evans for the equaliser in the 75th minute.

SPORT BRIEFS

‘BEATEN’ VAN NIEKERK SNATCHES WIN

ANTON VAN NIEKERK beat Englishman Michael Monaghan by technical knockout in the seventh round of their junior middleweight Nashua Fight Night/Golden Gloves headliner at the Carousel on Tuesday night. After being severely punished by Monaghan, the plucky South African, who was bleeding profusely from a cut above his right eye, took the fight to the Briton. Monaghan, who was pumelled by powerful blows to the body and head, had blood pouring from his nose when he failed to answer the bell for the seventh round.

McLEOD TO REF IN WORLD CUP

IAN McLEOD will become the first South African to officiate in the Soccer World Cup when he takes charge of his first match in June. South Africa is the only country to have three officials on duty in the tournament. Ari Soldatos and Achmet Salie will also officiate. McLeod was chosen to replace Ugandan Charles Masembe as one of five African referees.

NTINI FOR TEST SPOT?

THE South African cricket selectors will spend four days watching the Supersport Series match between Border and Free State at Buffalo Park in East London next week prior to naming the SA team to play Sri Lanka in the first Test at Newlands next Thursday. This move might be the clearest indication so far that Border seamer Makhaya Ntini is to be included in the South African Test side.
