‘ANC baby deserved death’

MONDAY, 5.00PM:

AN Inkatha Freedom Party member convicted for murder for his part in the June 1992 Boipatong massacre testified on Monday before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission in Sebokeng on the murder of a nine-month-old baby during the attack.

Victor Mthandeni Mthembu, 29, is seeking amnesty for his part in the massacre in which 46 people were killed. After being asked about the killing of baby Aaron Mathope, he told the TRC’s amnesty committee that residents were attacked simply because they supported the ANC, and that their age was not important. ”A snake gives birth to another snake,” he said.

When Mthembu was asked why it was necessary to inflict mulitiple stab wounds on people, some of whom were asleep, he replied: ”They were not just sleeping, they were sleeping in Boipatong.”

Mthembu is one of 15 people applying for amnesty for the massacre.
