Quality athletes for Dakar

ATHLETICS South Africa has opted for a small but quality squad to travel to the African Championships in Dakar, Senegal, next month, with the sole intention of winning a gold medal and sealing a place in the African World Cup team.

So said ASA secretary general Banele Sindani when naming the team on Wednesday.

Said Sindani: “It is for that purpose that we are sending a small, quality team to Senegal for the African Champs, so that our athletes can concentrate on winning gold and make the Africa team to compete in the World Cup from September 11-13 at the Johannesburg Stadium.”

The team:

Men: 400m: Arnaud Malherbe (CG); 800m: Hezekiel Sepeng (CG); 110m hurdles: Shaun Bownes (CNW); 400m hurdles: Llewellyn Herbert (GN); high jump: Casper Labuschagne (CG), Gavin Lendis (WP); pole-vault: Ockert Brits (Bol), Riaan Botha (GN); shot-put: Janus Robberts (NP), Burger Lamprecht (GN); Discus: Franz Kruger (FS), Fritz Potgieter (GN); hammerthrow: Chris Harmse (VT); javelin: Marius Corbett (CNW).

Women: 100m hurdles: Corien Botha (CG); high jump: Hestrie Storbeck (CNW); shot-put: Veronica Abrahamse (KZN); discus: Elizna Naude (GN).
