SABC in the black

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Johannesburg| Wednesday 4.30pm.

THE South African Broadcasting Corporation is expected next week to announce a surplus of over R100-million in its end-of-year financial results, outgoing chief executive Zwelakhe Sisulu said at a function in Johannesburg on Wednesday.

“We no longer have an identification crisis … The SABC is poised to enter the next century proud to hold its own with the best in the world,” Zulu said, adding that he is proud to leave the broadcaster talking of profit margins, and not losses.

Incoming chief executive Reverend Hawu Mbatha said Phil Molefe has been appointed as the corporation’s chief of television news. He is expected to take office in October. Current TV chief Allister Sparks will be on a special assignment “to put the SABC on a correct footing as far as competition is concerned in Africa and the world”.
