NIGERIA’S rising sprint star Seun Ogunkoya won the African Championships 100 metres title in Dakar on Wednesday by eclipsing world and Olympic silver medallist Frankie Fredericks. Ogunkoya won in a personal best of 9.94 seconds, with pre-race favourite Fredericks timing 9.97 ahead of Ghana’s Leo Mills Myles in 10.10.
Former world champion Samuel Matete of Zambia, meanwhile, won the 400 metres hurdles in 48.57 seconds, well clear of Zimbabwean Kenneth Harden (49.39) et Senegal’s Ibou Faye (49.49).
Mary Onyali won the women’s 100m in 11.05 as Nigeria took all three medals, Endurance Ojokolo second in 11.O8 and Rose Aboaja in 11.31.
Ethiopia’s Adere Brhane won the women’s 5,OOOm in 15 minutes 54.3 seconds ahead of Kenyan Sally Barbosio and another Ethiopian, Merima Demboba.
