NIGERIA won 23 medals, including 11 golds, earning the tag of being the best athletic team on the continent at the 11th African athletics championships which ended in Dakar on Saturday.

South Africa placed second with a haul of 11 medals, including seven golds. The Kenyan team did not fare badly either, and were blowing down the necks of the South Africans with their bag of 10 medals, six of which are golds.

Meanwhile, hosts Senegal won their only gold medal in the men’s 400m X 4 relay at the close of the Championships on Saturday, the speedy Senegalese clocked a time of 3:04,20.

However, it was Frankie Fredericks of Namibia’s victory in the 200 m sprint which electrified the Leopold Sedar Senghor stadium. The Namibian clocked 19,99 and will represent Africa in the 200m at the World Cup Athletics competition in South Africa next month.
