Lions win in 11 try festival

GOLDEN LIONS scored seven tries in an entertaining match in Johannesburg on Saturday to beat Eastern Province by 43-22. But Province played a spirited game and go home with a bonus point, thanks to scoring four tries.

Lions went ahead in the ninth minute with a try by flanker Janus Labuschagne, followed by another five minutes later by centre Rudi Keil, both tries the result of moves set up under pressure by flanker Walter Minnaar. Both tries were converted by fullback Kobus Engelbrecht, putting the home side 14-0 up.

Province were back in the game a minute later with a try from scrumhalf Chad Alcock, who first charged down a Lions kick, chased the loose ball and grabbed it to cross the line, with flyhalf Andries van Niekerk converting.

Other fine tries in an excellent game included a 60 metre dash over the line by Province right wing Deon Kayser in the 48th minute, and another 60 metre dash by Province left wing Henry Pedro who scored in the 77th minute.
