Bucs into quarters

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Johannesburg | Sunday 2.00PM.

ORLANDO Pirates took their place in the quarterfinals of the Rothmans Cup soccer competition when they drew 1-1 with Bloemfontein Celtic at the First National Bank Stadium, winning 5-1 on aggregate.

Celtic’s chances were remmote from the start, after being 3-0 down on aggregate from their first round defeat in Bloemfontein two weeks ago.

The Buccaneers put the matter beyond dispute when they fired in through Mandla Zwane in the 58th minute. Willem De Vries scored for Celtic in the 81st minute, but it was to no avail as Bucs took their place in the knockout stages.

Both teams could have scored more goals, but bad finishing let them down. Steve Lokoloa of Pirates was particularly unluchky not to have scored in the 80th minute.

Jomo Cosmos advanced to the quarter-finals of the Rothmans Cup on the away goals rule when they came from behind to equalise against Santos in a hard 1-1 draw played at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town on Friday night.

Santos opened the scoring in the 65th minute when substitute Peter Philander passed to David Notoano who sent to Daniel Sekhoto. Sekhoto rounded advancing goalkeeper Silver Tshabalala to score.

In the 80th minute Tico-Tico Buchane levelled the scores after a quick build-up by the visitors. Santos often caught the visitors off-side and also had 12 corners to one by Cosmos.

A last-minute goal by Zambian striker Joseh Chikoti on Friday night at the Milpark Stadium assured Wits University of a place in the quarterfinals of the Rothmans Cup.

The sides drew 0-0 in their first leg clash at George Goch Stadium and in Friday’s encounter went into the break on a 0-0 stalemate.
