Jones does a double

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Johannesburg | Sunday 2.00pm.

MARION Jones again delivered the goods at the World Cup of athletics at the Johannesburg Stadium on Saturday, clocking the fourth fastest women’s 100m in history.

After on Friday running the tird fastest 200m ever, the 22 year-old Jones produced a stunning 10,65sec to win in a personal best time and lead the field by five metres.

The African team recorded three victories, with Glory Alozie starting the day right by winning the 100m hurdles in 12,58 sec. Former world champion Maria Mutola of Mozambique took victory in the 800m in a time of 1,59.88sec.

Kenyan Laban Rotich held on from Rui Silva to take the men’s 1500m in 3min 40,87sec. Rotich’s counterpart Bernard Barmasai badly miscalculated the 3000m steeplechase, giving the race to German Damian Kallabis who won in a time of 8min 31,85 sec.

The South Africans had mixed fortunes, with Chris Harmse finishing seventh in the hammer throw, while Frantz Kruger threw a personal best of 65,73 to finish third in the discus. The African team also finished third in the 4x100m relay.
