Kruger takes discus silver

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Kuala Lumpur | Thursday 9.00pm.

FIFTH-year medical student Frantz Kruger took Games silver in the discus on Thursday night, in the Bukit Jalil Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.

Kruger, hot from a personal best throw of 65,73m at the International Athletics Federation World Cup in Johannesburg, threw 63,93 on his sixth throw to come in just 49cm short of the winning 64,42m from Briton Robert Weir.

Standing 2,03m, he overcame the intense Malaysian humidity to grab his second medal in international competition within a month: “I was third at the World Cup and second today — who knows? Next time I’m in a major international, it might be gold.”

National discus champion Frants Potgieter struggled in the event, finishing sixth after five no-throws, with just 59,01m in his second attempt to show for his efforts.
