EP slam struggling Boland

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Johannesburg | Thursday 7.00am.

EASTERN Province thrashed Boland by 62 runs in their Standard Bank League limited-overs cricket match at St George’s Park on Wednesday night, with their bowlers particularly devastating.

Eastern Province scored 224 in their alotted 45 overs, with Louis Koen, Dave Callaghan and Mark Rushmere playing good innings. Koen again showed his class to score 42, Rushmere got 29 and skipper Callaghan scored 20 off 20 balls.

Boland, who were bowled out for 69 by Gauteng last Friday, never came to grips with the Eastern Province bowling, and ended the match on 162/8 in 44 overs, after losing one over because of a slow over rate.

Meyrick Pringle and Eldine Baptiste made short work of the first five wickets, and had the visitors reeling on 28/5 in the 20th over. Only the sixth-wicket stand of 114 between Steve Palframan (66) and Chad Grainger (47) gave some credibility to the Boland scorecard.

The partnership was eventually broken when Grainger was caught in the covers off the bowling of Nantie Hayward, and Palframan perished to Callaghan’s first delivery without any addition to the score.
