SA take Wills title

OWN CORRESPONDENT and AFP, Dhaka | Monday 1.00am.

SOUTH Africa’s cricket side continued its good run of form in Dhaka in Sunday, beating the West Indies to claim the Wills International Cup.

South Africa finished at 248 for six in 47 overs, led by captain Hansie Cronje’s 61 and his astute leadership. The South Africans won the toss and elected to field, from where they held the West Indies to 245 in 49.3.

The Windies were led by the powerful Phillo Wallace with 103, an innnings that included five sixes and 11 fours.

South Africa’s Jacques Kallis, the man of the match, kick-started the Windies’ collapse. His haul of five for 30 included the dismissal of Carl Hooper, who scored 49. Cronje also returned good figures, bagging three scalps for 44 runs.

The Windies’ biggest blow came when captain Brian Lara was bowled around his legs by off-spinner Derek Crookes for only 11 runs.

Though Bangladesh was the host, its team was not among the nine taking part in the tournament because it does not have Test status.
