Boks unhappy with refs

OWN CORRESPONDENT, London | Thursday 4.45pm.

SOUTH African centre Andre Snyman says the world champions are being cheated by referees and has slammed the way they are being treated by rugby officials.

The 25-times capped centre, in Britain with the rest of the touring South African squad, said: “We feel penalised more than any other team.

“If it was anyone else, there would be replay after replay after replay to make sure decisions are right. But we think it’s something against South Africa to show everyone.

“Against Glasgow there was a lot of stamping, and it ruined the game, but the referee allowed it. It’s unfair. The referee should be equally strict to both sides.”

Jake White, technical advisor to the South African team, agreed with Snyman’s view that refereeing was inferior. He said: “Having professional referees is a must. There’s so much money at stake today.

“A player is determined by his game, it affects the guy’s career. It’s very important that all the officials are of the same standard and that they’re judged on their performances.”

South Africa on Wednesday cited Glasgow flanker Jason White over an alleged stamping incident in their 62-9 win over the Scottish side in the opening match of their tour of Britain and Ireland on Tuesday.
