Premiero may cause upset at home

DAVID LEGGE, Johannesburg | Friday 1.15pm.

GOAL-hungry Angolans Premiero de Agosto stand between Esperance of Tunisia and a place in the African football record books on Sunday.

The clubs meet at the Citadela Stadium in the Atlantic Ocean city of Luanda with the North Africans defending a 3-1 lead from the first leg of the African Cup Winners Cup final.

Overall victory for Esperance will complete a clean sweep of continental titles following success in the 1994 Champions Cup, 1995 Super Cup and 1997 African Football Confederation Cup.

While the Tunisians can draw comfort from the knowledge that no club with a two-goal, first-leg lead has failed to lift the cup, they must have dreamt of a less intimidating finale.

Military club Premiero have scored 17 goals without reply at home en route to the final against Notwane of Botswana, Fire Brigade of Mauritius, USMA of Algeria and Africa Sports of Cote d’Ivoire.

Former winners Africa Sports came to Luanda in the semi-finals with a 3-1 lead only to be swept aside by an attacking onslaught that produced two goals in each half.

Angola are seeking a first African club title and victory over Esperance will be particularly sweet as the Tunisians defeated another Luanda club, Petro Atletico, in the last CAF Cup final.–AFP
