Briton Westwood takes lead

OWN CORRESPONDENT , Sun City | Friday 6.30pm.

SATURDAY UPDATE:

LEE WESTWOOD of Britain took the lead on Saturday. He shot a record-equaling 65 on Friday, then an inspired 66 on Saturday, putting him two shots ahead of Justin Leonard, with Tiger Woods and Nick Price four shots behind him. Ernie Els is two shots behind Woods.

FRIDAY UPDATE:

Zimbabwe’s Nick Price hit a second-round 68 on Friday to take a one-shot lead into the third round of the Million Dollar Challenge at Sun City.

Price, nine-under par over the first two rounds, leads American Mark O’Meara by one shot. England’s Lee Westwood surged up the scoreboard with 65 is joint third on seven-under par with Justin Leonard from the United States. They both shot 137 for the total 36 holes.

Bernhard Langer had a steady 70 to follow his first round 69 to stay within four shots of Price, joint fourth with South Africa’s Ernie Els on five-under.

Tiger Woods fought back from a dismal start when he double-bogeyed the eighth, but hit four birdies over the last eight holes.

It had been a frustrating afternoon for Woods, who threw down his putter after missing a simple putt for a birdie on the 10th, and held his head in his hands. “God, can I get any worse than this. I haven’t hit a good shot all day,” a frustrated Woods said.

Price, however, was pragmatic abvout his performance. “All in all a good day for me,” he said. “I wasn’t particularly concerned about hanging onto the lead today. I just wanted to be in a position where I was either one or two back and that’s where I want to be tomorrow.”- AFP
