South Africa lost their first wicket with their score on five when opener Herschelle Gibbs was caught by Clayton Lambert off a delivery by Curtley Ambrose.
SOUTH Africa’s pacemen took a hold of the second Test against the West Indies dimissing the tourists for a paltry 121 in their first innings for first innings lead of 124.
Aided by an excellent bowling strip Shaun Pollock, Allan Donald and David Terbrugge gave the Windies no breathing space.
The first wicket fell with no score on the board when Clayton Lambert mistimed a delivery from Shaun Pollock and holed out to Hansie Cronje for a duck.
The next wicket to fall was big fish Brian Lara who continued his bad run of form when he clipped one to Jacques Kallis in the slips off Allan Donald for four.
David Terbrugge playing in only his second Test for South Africa struck three times to claim the wickets of Stuart Williams and Carl Hooper before lunch. The flame-haired youngster bowled Williams for 37 and then produced a snorter to send Hooper back for 15 with his stumps rearranged.
Shivnarine Chanderpaul was the fifth wicket to go when he was trapped leg-before by Pollock for four attempting to play off the back foot. Terbrugge than claimed his third wicket when he clean bowled Ridley Jacobs for one with a delivery which knocked out the left-hander’s off stump.
Floyd Reifer’s dismissal took the score to 75/7. Reifer nudged one back to wicketkeeper Mark Boucher off a Pollock delivery for a duck.
Nixon McLean then entered the fray for a brief, but spectacular innings of 31. The paceman did not give the bowlers much respect bludgeoning his runs off only 12 deliveries, hitting four sixes. He eventually fell to Donald, caught at mid-on by Hansie Cronje.
Shaun Pollock’s final two wickets were true beauties. The all-rounder first fooled Mervyn Dillon with a fine slower ball which the tail-ender scooped up for Jonty Rhodes with his score on nine.
Pollock’s fifth wicket was that of Curtley Ambrose who he clean-bowled for 12. Ambrose moved away from his stumps in order to give the ball a good whip, but instead saw his middle stump go cartwheeling.
