SOUTH AFRICAN road deaths totalled 455 on Wednesday from December 1, according to Johann Kilian of Arrive Alive. The toll stands at 151 drivers, 167 passengers and 137 pedestrians. The season has brought 313 fatal accidents. Most of the road deaths were reported in KwaZulu-Natal, with 90, followed by 67 in Gauteng, 59 in the Eastern Cape, 72 in the Western Cape, 44 in Mpumalanga, 37 in the Free State, 35 in the Northern Province, 32 in North-West and 19 in the Northern Cape. While the number of deaths this year is only slightly up from the same period last year, Arrive Alive cautions that there is usually an increase of road deaths between Christmas and New Year.
