OWN CORRESPONDENT, Durban | Sunday 4.00pm.
FRANKLIN Rose, who had to fight to win his place in the West Indies team, has been the bowling hero on Sunday in the third test, taking six wickets, and also having a hand in a runout.
South Africa were a comfortable 262 for 5 until Rose took two quick wickets off the same over, sending out stalwarts Sean Pollock, with 30, and Mark Boucher with a duck. At close of play, called early due to bad light, South Africa were 94 runs ahead with 292, and two wickets left.
Rose, who has had to play second-string for more than a year, took his chance of a test place early, when he dismissed Herschell Gibbs, just after the latter had hit a superb four.
Daryl Cullinan and Hansie Cronje both made solid batting contributions, but the batting mainstay for the South Africans has been Jonty Rhodes, with 85 not out, the best batting score of this series.
Rhodes batted with enormous assurance, putting on a brisk 80 for the sixth wicket in partnership with fellow Natalian Sean Pollock. Rhodes will aim to make the first century of the series on Monday — but a lot will depend on his last-wicket stand with Alan Donald, who has in the past played magnificent final stands.

Saturday 5.00pm:
.AFTER a promising start with an opening partnership of 50 not out by Philo Wallace and Junior Murray, the West Indies slumped once again to a disappointing 198 all out in the third test against South Africa in Durban.
South African captain Hansie Cronje won the toss and sent the West Indians in to bat first. His hunch that this was a bowlers’ wicket paid off — as did his own bowling, taking three wickets for 19 runs. The other batsman who had a good day was Jaques Kallis, who collected three wickets for 18 runs. Paceman Alan Donald, notorious for starting slowly in tests, conceded 55 runs without taking any wickets.
West Indies captain Brian Lara showed the first signs on this test of his batting prowess with 51, his best score so far in the three tests.
The South Africans began batting late in the afternoon, starting strongly to reach 46 not out.
