RUGBY BOSS MOOTS MIXED TEAMS
SOUTH Africa’s rugby boss Silas Nkanunu said on Tuesday the Springboks’ World Cup squad should be more racially representative and team selection needed to take into account the injustices of apartheid. Nkanunu, the first black president of the South African Rugby Football Union, said he wants future national teams to include more black players, helped by a selection policy based on “merit with bias”. The squad for the World Cup, which kicks off in Wales on October 1, and the Tri-Nations tournament against Australia and New Zealand would be discussed at a meeting of SARFU’s 13-member executive next month in Cape Town, Nkanunu said. Nkanunu was elected to his Sarfu post after a bruising battle last year between former rugby boss Louis Luyt and the country’s black sport authorities.
8 DIE IN SOCCER STAMPEDE
EIGHT people were trampled to death at a football match and 15 others seriously injured when fans surged into a stadium in Alexandria, the Egyptian interior ministry said on Tuesday. The stampede occurred on Monday night during an Egypt Cup match between the Alexandria clubs Al-Ittihad and Al-Korum. The ministry said hundreds of fans, angered over a delay in opening the gates, tried to push their way into the stadium through a single entrance. Fifteen people were in hospital with broken bones and other injuries on Tuesday while five others received treatment and were released. The match went ahead despite the stampede and was won 1-0 by Al-Korum.
FREE STATE TRIUMPH IN NAMIBIA
FREE State A fast bowler Dewald Pretorius scythed through Ingenium Namibia’s top order on Monday to send the home team crashing to a 10-wicket defeat in their limited overs match at the Wanderers field in Windhoek. Namibia however gained some consolation on Saturday when they shared the bonus points in their three-day UCB Bowl match which ended in a draw. Namibia batted first in yesterday’s match, which was shortened to 40 overs a side after overnight rain had delayed the start of the match. Namibia were soon in trouble as Pretorius struck, clean bowling opener Darren Seagar for two and Gavin Murgatroyd for 6. He also clean bowled Melt van Schoor for a golden duck and had Lennie Louw caught behind for 11 to finish with four wickets for 14 runs off eight overs. Namibia couldn’t recover from the early setbacks as wickets tumbled regularly until they were all out for only 64 runs.
