‘MAD BOMBER’ FOR OBSERVATION?

THE Cape Town Magistrate’s Court will decide on Friday whether to send for psychiatric observation a man who confessed to planting the New Year’s Day bomb at Cape Town’s Waterfront. Charles Manamela (25), a Nigerian who is a naturalised South African, was arrested on January 12 for a spate of bomb hoaxes in Cape Town. Police say he confessed to the Waterfront bombing after his arrest. Police on Wednesday described Manamela as “totally mad”.

MOZ VETS HONOUR MADIBA

PRESIDENT Nelson Mandela and five other African statesmen were made honorary members of Mozambique’s national war veteran’s association in the central city of Chimoio on Thursday evening. The honour was bestowed on Mandela by Mozambican president and chairman of the Association of Veterans of the National Liberation Struggle, Joaquim Chissano, at the close of the association’s two-week conference. Other statesmen honoured at the event include Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, former Zambian president Kenneth Kaunda, former Tanzanian president Julius Nyerere and Organisation of African Unity official Hashim Mbita.
