THE Northern Transvaal Agricultural Union (NTAU) denied on Tuesday that commercial farmers in the province used juveniles as cheap farm labour. The denial follows reports to the contrary by the Human Rights Commission and non-governmental organisations in the province. NTAU spokeswoman, Ria van der Merwe, said in a statement on Tuesday that none of its members used children on their farms, following warnings that the practice was both illegal and immoral. She confirmed that the NTAU has joined the new Northern Province Child Labour Forum.
