VETERAN newsman and former Cape Times and Sunday Express editor, JC Koos Viviers, died after a battle with cancer on Wednesday. Viviers (61) started his career as a journalist at the Rand Daily Mail in 1955. In 1981 he was appointed editor of the Eastern Province Herald in Port Elizabeth, and editor-in-chief of the Herald, Evening Post and Weekend Post in 1986. While he was deputy editor of the Rand Daily Mail, he played a key role in the ‘Info Scandal’ expose which uncovered government funding of the Citizen newspaper. Viviers succeeded Anthony Heard as editor of the Cape Times on August 11, 1987, where he remained for almost a decade. He joined the Board of Independent Newspapers Cape in 1995 after stepping down as an editor.
