TEENAGE striker Venance Zere scored twice when ASEC of Cote d’Ivoire confirmed their status as the leading African club by defeating Esperance of Tunisia 3-1 to lift the Super Cup at the weekend. A thrilling showdown between Champions League winners ASEC and Cup Winners Cup holders Esperance quickly developed into a struggle between the youthful West Africans and the vastly experienced North Africans. Zere, a 17-year-old striker known as Zezeto who did not feature in the 1998 Champions League campaign, put ASEC ahead after 37 minutes before a capacity 50000 crowd at the Felix Houphouet-Boigny Stadium.The Ivorian team retained the lead until three minutes from the end, when Esperance were awarded a controversial penalty.Aruna Dindane put ASEC ahead again 12 minutes into extra time and Zere ensured the trophy returned to Abidjan after a five-year absence with a goal six minutes before the final whistle.
