NO EXPANSION FOR SUPER 12

SUPER 12 rugby’s governing body Sanzar has rejected bids from Australia and South Africa to expand the competition. Sanzar and New Zealand Rugby Football Union chairman Rob Fisher said no expansion is likely for at least three years. New Zealand has five teams, South Africa four and Australia three in the competition which leads up to the tri-nations test series early in the southern hemisphere season. The Australian Rugby Union earlier raised the possibility of a 16-team Super competition, with the other two teams from the United States and the South Pacific. Fisher said Monday’s meeting realized an expanded competition would further encroach into the cricket season or the southern hemisphere international rugby season.
