TAIWAN SEEKS TO EXTRADITE SKIPPER

THE Taipei government is seeking to extradite from Mauritius a Taiwanese skipper suspected of shooting to death two Chinese sailors on his ship during a mutiny last week, a Taiwanese official said on Monday. Mauritius recognises Beijing rather than Taipei. On February 16, captain Kung Tai-an of the Chin Ching 12 allegedly shot and killed Chinese crew members, Yang Yong and Li Xing Zeng, 1000 nautical miles (1851km) north-west of Mauritius. The Kaohsiung fishermens’ association says 15 Chinese sailors started a strike for an unknown reason and that, “The captain opened fired probably for his own safety. The other 13 Chinese sailors later threw themselves overboard and are still listed as missing.”
