TOYOTA South Africa’s car assembly plant was closed for a fourth straight day on Thursday, hit by a strike over bonus pay, but a union official said members will return to work on Friday. “Our members have decided to go back to work on Friday after [we have read] Toyota’s financial statements due out today,” Magrapes Hlatshwayo, a spokesman for the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa, said. Toyota, South Africa’s largest car manufacturer, was scheduled to release its financial results for the year ended December 31, 1998, by 4.00pm local time. Toyota Motor Corporation of Japan has a minority stake in Toyota South Africa. Hlatshwayo said Numsa wants to ascertain Toyota’s claim that it cannot afford paying out profit-linked incentives this year because of its failure to meet 1998 profit targets.
