AEC ADMITS CHEMICAL LEAK

AN underground plastic pipeline, carrying non-uranium bearing chemical effluent to one of the evaporation pans of the Atomic Energy Corporation leaked, releasing fluoride containing effluent into the Moganwe Spruit, the AEC said on Friday. The leak occured on March 18 and “immediate corrective actions were taken,” the AEC said. The pumping of effluent was stopped and released effluent was collected from the weirs, then lime was strewn over the area to neutralise the chemical effect. A low volume of fluoride containing effluent, however, leaked into the local Moganwe spruit, the AEC said. “AEC is satisfied that this occurrence has not endangered anybody,” it said.
