DURBANITE THIRD IN WOMEN’S SURFING

DURBANITE Heather Clark finished third in the Woman’s World Qualifying Series Quit Women’s Classic at Margaret River in Western Australia at the weekend, boosting her to number three on the ASP Women’s WQS ratings. In a spectacular opening performance in the R75000 tournament, Clark defeated Australian Neridah Falconer, ranked ninth on the 1998 women’s World Championship Tour. Then Clark took an early lead in the quarterfinals as she emerged victorious over 11th-ranked Brazilian Tita Maria Tavares, before winning her semifinal clash. Australian Kate Skarratt took the gold, with last year’s runner-up Melanie Redman placing second again with Clark and Tavares finishing third and fourth respectively.

In the Coca-Cola Masters men’s tournament at the same venue, Paul Canning of Durban was the highest-placed South African in 13th position. East London’s Greg Emslie finished 17th, with Sean Holmes (S Cape) 81st.
