HORSE DEATH TOLL AT 14

THE death toll from African horse sickness in the Western Cape has risen to 14 and another 12 suspected cases have been reported, an expert said on Tuesday. Professor Alan Guthrie from the Equine Research Centre at Onderstepoort Veterinary Institute near Pretoria confirmed the death toll but said the outbreak was still restricted to the Jonkershoek area outside Stellenbosch. Guthrie also confirmed that all exports of horses from South Africa had been suspended. This means Faralmond, who was due to leave for Hong Kong on Friday to contest the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, will now be out of the race.
