Barry Eksteen, representative for the Department of Correctional Services, responds: “Prisoners often report subjectively on their experience of prison life. In this case the allegations are generalised and without facts such as dates, names and times. I therefore prefer not to comment on his alleged experiences. However, the department has taken cognisance of them and will follow them up.
“Pretoria Local prison houses mainly awaiting trial prisoners and it is well known how overcrowded that particular prison is. The overcrowding impacts very negatively on the day-to-day management of this prison.
“Corruption remains enemy number one to sound administration, but every complaint is followed up and if substantiated, the law will take its course. Management does not condone any illegal actions by staff. We have a proven record for acting against staff where appropriate. Cases of corruption may be reported anonymously at (012) 307-2275.”
