TWO women were killed and 800 informal dwellings were destroyed after a violent storm struck Soshanguve, north of Pretoria on Thursday night, northern Pretoria metropolitan sub-structure spokesman Gerhard van Eeden said on Friday. Van Eeden said the roofs of 300 formal homes were extensively damaged and about 28000 houses were left without electricity on Friday. According to police spokesman Gideon Thessner two women died when their shacks collapsed on them during the storm. At an emergency meeting on Friday afternoon it was decided that the first priority is to provide blankets and thick plastic sheeting to cover the damaged roofs of houses and shacks.
HEATH WANTS IBA TO PAY UP
THE Heath special investigation unit said on Friday that it will seek to recover more than R200000 from former Independent Broadcasting Authority councillors. Spokesman Guy Rich said the amount of R241722 was found to be “recoverable” by Public Protector Selby Baqwa, who released a special report on the affairs of the IBA in November last year year. The money was allegedly spent by former councillors outside the course of their duties.
