MAMELODI Sundowns’ Mandela Cup hopes were given a serious knock on Sunday when the Premier League leaders went down 2-1 to Zambian rivals Nkana Red Devils in the first leg of the second round of the African Cup Winners Cup in Kitwe, Zambia.
Sundowns’ Namibian international goalkeeper Ronnie Kanalelo effectively killed all chances of victory when he made two bad mistakes in the first half, both resulting in goals for the Copper Belt team.
Kanalelo, replacing regular ‘keeper, John Tlale tried to dribble an opponent when he could easily have kicked the ball upfield, was dispossessed, and the Devils were awarded a penalty which Gift Campamba put away in the 37th minute.
The Devils made it 2-0 through Musale Fakulands in the 59th minute.
Sundowns lifted their game and scored the away goal in the 74th minute through striker Kenny Niemach.
IN Lusaka Manning Rangers beat Power Dynamos 2-0 in their African Champions League second-round match.
Simon Makhubela and Kerryn Jordaan scored the Mighty Maulers’ goals.
