R1M OF AZT DONATED

GLAXO WELLCOME, the pharmaceutical company which produces AZT and MTC, announced on Monday it will donate “starter packs” containing the drugs to healthcare workers exposed to possible HIV infection. Company spokeswoman Vicki Ehrich said the 5000 packs, worth R1-million, are designed for healthcare workers who may have been exposed to HIV through needle-pricking or other accidents. The packs contain AZT and 3TC for the first three days of treatment, she said. The rest of the 28-day treatment would be prescribed by a doctor. The National Association of People Living with HIV/Aids on Monday announced it will demonstrate outside the Midrand head office of Glaxo Wellcome on Wednesday. The demonstration will form part of the association’s Treatment Action Campaign, said spokeswoman Sharon Ekambaram. The association has written to Glaxo asking whether the company will make AZT available at cost price to all pregnant women with HIV.
