‘MBOWENI WON’T ROCK THE BOAT’

FEARS that new Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni will adopt populist policies are fading, Old Mutual Asset Management head of economic research Rian le Roux said on Thursday. “Financial markets are taking the view that little change is likely given the realities of the economic situation. This is reflected in the stable bond and currency markets,” Le Roux said. He added that while the inflation rate continues to fall, the still relatively high core inflation rate will prevent any major policy shift. Le Roux called for tighter monetary policy, and said Mboweni would hold course given the same economic situations as his predecessor.
