Pirates win, Sundowns draw Africa matches

OWN CORRESPONDENT, Johannesburg | Saturday 9.00pm.

ORLANDO Pirates pulled off a fine 3-1 win over Desporto Maxaquene 3-1 in an African Cup Winners Cup first leg, second round at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Saturday.

Pirates converted more chances and made better use of the field and opportunities. It took a goal by Sam Pam and a brace by Sibusiso Zuma to hand the Bucanneers the crucial home win.

A place kick by Brendon Silent opened the scoring in the 14th minute, and 18 minutes later captain John Moeti fed Zuma to make it 2-0.

Maxaquene came back strongly after the break, but poor finishing by their strike trio Mabue, Goncalves and Helder was the order of the day.

Zuma got his second after a long pass from defender Gerald Raphahlela, who set the striker free to score again in the 52nd minute.

Maxaquene got their goal when Helder made it 3-1 in the 57th minute.

Moeti was shown the red card when he punched Maxaquene’s Macamitor in the 85th minute, but the visitors could not take advantage of the situation.

An ultra-defensive Saint Louisienne from Reunion held Mamelodi Sundowns to a 1-1 draw in a Caf Champions League Cup clash at Odi Stadium on Saturday.

The Indian Ocean islanders packed their defence with no fewer than six men and made it tough for the hosts striking pair of Daniel Mudau and Raphael Chukwu.

It was left to Sunowns’ former Cameroonian national midfielder Roger Feutmba to break the ice with a brilliant goal in the 34th minute from a defence-splitting pass by Mudau.

Bafana Bafana goalkeeper John Tlale came to Sundowns’ rescue in the 64th minute when he parried Rina Rasolosoa’s powerful shot for a corner, but was however unable to stop striker Alain Amougou’s header from meetingthe back of the net for the equaliser in the 71st minute.
