ARRESTS FOR GOLD THEFT

POLICE arrested 100 people for stealing unwrought gold and uncut diamonds from local mines. The arrests come from a sting operation code named Egoli. The minerals were allegedly stolen from the Randfontein and Western Areas mines. The 10-month sting operation netted 44kg of gold and 50 carats of uncut diamonds. The arrests follow the blow to the diamond industry from the theft of a 186-carat diamond worth over $2-million which was smuggled out of the country last week.
