President Nelson Mandela was welcomed by his Chinese counterpart Jiang Zemin in Beijing on Wednesday on the first-day of his landmark visit aimed at improving economic ties, official media reports said. Mandela’s three-day visit is the first by a president of post-apartheid South Africa, and the final leg of his farewell tour before leaving office next month. Mandela is scheduled to meet with Premier Zhu Rongji, and parliamentary chairman Li Peng, after delivering a speech at Beijing University. Officials do not know whether Mandela — who in the past has given a face-to-face dressing down to the likes of US President Bill Clinton — will delve into the thorny issue of human rights violations.
Somalis import anarchy to Kenya
Kenya President Daniel Arap Moi has told the United Nations to repatriate Somali refugees living in camps along the border, according to Tuesday’s local Daily Nationuesday.Moi said the refugees in northeastern Kenya abused the locals by contributing to insecurity and smuggling firearms.
The government will take stern action against refugees who sneaked from the designated camps in to urban centres to perpetuate crime, Moi said.He urged warring Somali factions to resolve their difference to allow their people to live peacefully in their homeland.Ethnic Somali parliamentarians in Kenya have recently urged the government to relocate the refugees to other parts of Kenya.There are 108000 Somali refugees in three camps in northeast Kenya.
