SIX DIE IN KZN FACTION FIGHTING

SIX people, including an elderly blind man, were shot dead in Tugela Ferry in volatile KwaZulu-Natal province on Thursday, police said on Friday morning. The murders seemed to be the work of gunmen going from hut to hut in the village, firing into the victims’ homes early Thursday, police spokesman Captain Vishnu Naidoo said. Police believe the killings are part of a long-running feud between two rural tribes, the Othame and the Mgubevu, who live side by side in Tugela Ferry, situated in the Msinga region of northern KwaZulu-Natal. The murders have no apparent link to simmering political tension in the province ahead of South Africa’s June 2 general elections.
