MALI GOALIE DEFIES NAM

SEVERAL superb saves by Mamadou Sidibe earned Mali a 0-0 draw with Namibia in an African Nations Cup Group 3 qualifier in Windhoek on Saturday. Namibia created numerous chances during an impressive performance at the Independence Stadium only to be foiled by wild finishing and the acrobatic Sidibe. Mali, needing a victory to replace Congo in second position on the table behind Cote d’Ivoire, were strangely subdued and only threatened Namibia during sporadic counterattacks. Namibia host Cote d’Ivoire on June 5 and Mali entertain Congo on June 6 in the penultimate series of matches. The group winners and runners-up qualify for the 2000 finals in Ghana and Nigeria.
